Very happy to announce that “Fuck You Norman Rockwell” was published in China’s newspaper section: People’s Photography. I have Filter Photo Festival in Chicago to thank for the introduction to Yan Li and Huo Wei who published this work. Thank you!

To date, Fuck You Norman Rockwell has been a self-funded body of work. I now have the opportunity to show this work in Bejing. There are 11 total images left to create for exhibition, and each one averages $4,000 for production. Some stories are already sketched out, and some stories are waiting for you to share them (see rewards)

Help me grow this body of work, tell one another’s stories, and bring communities together through the act of expression, vulnerability, and courage.

Once, I was asked to sign one of the images inside, and another leave behind became a tool for a reviewer to teach his students with. Alyssa Miserendino Artist Talk Update & April 20, Elmhurst Art Museum Soiree

My first museum talk was a success. With one of the largest group of attendants to date, I was surprised when I had to relocate myself within the gallery, to screen the documentary following the talk. People were spilling out into the hallway of the gallery, and it completely caught me off guard. With the poor weather conditions, I really appreciated everyone who came out – a warm thank you to everyone in attendance and to Staci Boris for the opportunity.

The talk opened with a quote that was interwoven with how my work has evolved overtime from me to we:
“We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness” – Thich Nhat Hanh
And it ended with showing the documentary by Isabela Alzuguir, who followed me through the production of Our World Insideout: Brazil.

The exhibition will be on display until April 20th:

I’ve been sitting on this new project quietly for a bit, as it starts to grow. Some of you have helped to create this new body of work, & some of you have seen it at review sessions over the last year. I have a little book I carry around, with drawings of childhood events some of you have chose to share with me.

If you have a story to share, let’s get together, have a drink &/or dinner, and have a little fun designing your memory in photographic form.

OWI @ Elmhurst Art Museum Opening – January 18, 2012 – Open House, Art About Home

Over two years ago I met Staci Boris, the current Chief Curator at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Staci is former associate curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and former Senior Curator at the Spertus Museum. Funny enough, I was born in a little town, outside of Milwaukee, where Staci grew up.

When we met in 2010, in my little studio office, she mentioned she always wanted to curate a show about home. It is with great joy, that Our World Insideout has its first Museum debut featuring series images from Milwaukee, Chicago, New Orleans, Rio De Janeiro & São Paulo — this is the first time all these cities will be showcased in the same room, and the first time images of New Orleans will live outside of the film camera they were created in.

Kitchen interior published – USA today, HOME edition – Maximize with Less

From photography to interior design, I’ve always had a love for home interiors. Prior to consulting on interior design, I worked under two wonderful mentors – Jean & Ruthie Alan. In fact, I was hired because of the interior of my home, I once photographed – not because of my limited previous interior design experience (though I’d like to count the fact that I spent a week scraping old wallpaper from my bedroom at 13 & also built my own custom bed, so I could sleep closer to the outdoors). I learned quite a bit from Jean & Ruthie, and most importantly to respect and balance a client’s aesthetic with my own, as a designer. They were geniuses at reusing and collecting items from artisans around Chicago and the world. It was a privilege to learn in this way.

This is my first solo, full overhaul of a kitchen remodel, I am thrilled to have a full page spread in USA Today’s Home edition. The highlights of the kitchen are:

- new wood floor seamlessly added to old surrounding wood flooring
- used existing dishwasher & stove
- under counter refrigerator & freezer, eliminating a vertical mass (Summit Appliance)
- kitchen cabinets + microwave + task lighting from Ikea
- exhaust fan of microwave, for stove top, is vented into the building’s exhaust vent
- kitchen counter top hand selected at slab vendor, via ikea (anyone can request this!)
- Surface mounted lighting fixture from Lightology’s sale section
- blacksplash, white penny rounds, from The Tile Shop
- Coleman stool, Greta de Parry
